A notorious spammer who made a fortune sending out unwanted messages about low-interest home loans and debt-counseling services while he was an undergraduate at the University of Texas at Austin has reached a settlement with the state of Texas and Microsoft. The spammer, 24-year-old Ryan Pitylak, must give up at least $1-million in assets, including his BMW and his upscale home. He was also forced to promise never again to send unsolicited or misleading e-mail messages.
Mr. Pitylak graduated from the University of Texas last month, and he says he hopes to get a job fighting the very spam that brought him fortune. “I started to realize [spam] is bad for business and bad for society, and I wanted to do something to resolve that,” he told reporters.
