Speakers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s 2006 Spam Conference, held yesterday, discussed various methods of stemming the tide of junk e-mail. But the most commonly used tactic, e-mail filtering, barely even registered on most participants’ radar screens.
Trying to filter out spam, most speakers seemed to agree, is rather like trying to stop a flood by sticking one’s finger in a dike. Instead of looking for technological solutions to the problem, antispam activists should aid law-enforcement efforts and and look for ways to punish spammers financially, conference attendees suggested.
