Spain’s Superfast Supercomputer

Europe’s fastest supercomputer is up and running for the first time.

MareNostrum—an IBM machine run by a consortium that includes the Technical University of Catalonia, in Barcelona—can make up to 40 trillion calculations per second. The supercomputer, billed as the fourth largest in the world, will be used to research aerodynamics, biology, and genetics, among other fields.
