Never mind that the celebration will exist only digitally. San Jose State University's School of Library and Information Science will put on a big show for the May 16 opening of its campus in Second Life, an online virtual world.
Visitors can enjoy cocktails and magic-carpet rides and take tours of the campus, all 16 virtual acres of it. Daniel Livingstone, a lecturer at the University of Paisley, in Scotland, will give a talk on virtual learning environments at San Jose State that will be simulcast in Second Life. And beginning this summer, the library school's students and professors will use the virtual environment to meet, hold lectures, and build objects, among other activities. —Andrea L. Foster
