Now that classes are back in session, the Recording Industry Association of America is once again suing college network users suspected of illegally swapping songs. Computer users at 17 different institutions were among the 757 people identified in this month’s batch of John Doe lawsuits.
Some of the piracy suspects were caught on popular peer-to-peer networks like KaZaA and LimeWire, but many were users of i2hub—a service that lets students swap files on Abilene, Internet2’s high-speed research network. The recording industry seems intent on putting the rogue service in its crosshairs: Since April it has made a point to name i2hub users in its antipiracy suits.
