A law student allegedly associated with a satirical blog out of the Syracuse University College of Law is no longer threatened with code-of-conduct violations by the college, according to the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education. The foundation reports today that the law school has dropped its investigation of unspecified harassment allegations; a university official says the student has apologized to offended individuals.

I am Kevin Quinn, Senior VP for Public Affairs at Syracuse. I want to provide some context that is not include in this Chronicle entry.

The Syracuse College of Law had been investigating complaints from students that alleged another College of Law student violated the College’s Code of Student Conduct by posting inappropriate attacks on students and staff members on an anonymous public blog. The College has an obligation to investigate any complaint filed by students.

Late last week, the student in question spontaneously posted, on his personal website, an admission of his involvement with the blog along with a public apology. He also sent private letters of apology to students who were attacked by name, and it is our understanding that the blog was taken down entirely last week.

Given these developments, and after consultation with the students who filed the complaints, we determined it is in the best interest of those who were targeted by the blog to end the investigation and not pursue the matter any further.
