Professors Play the Role of Anticheating Police

May 18, 2006, 11:01 am

As cellphones and PDA’s get smaller, unscrupulous students’ attempts to use the devices to cheat are becoming trickier. At the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, for example, some students recently hatched a scheme in which they photographed test questions with their cellphone cameras, sent the images to friends outside the classroom, and got answers back in the form of text messages.

So what’s a beleaguered professor to do? A number of proctors are taking technology out of the equation altogether — by making test-takers hand over cell phones and iPods when they enter the classroom, and by forcing students to work in the now-quaint medium of pen on paper. (The New York Times)
