March 2, 2006, 12:06 pm

Peter Naur, a Danish computer scientist known for his seminal work on a programming language called Algol 60, is the winner of the 2005 A.M. Turing Award. The award, bestowed annually by the Association for Computing Machinery, recognizes engineers and programmers whose research has created a lasting impact on the field of information technology.

Mr. Naur certainly fits that bill. As the driving force behind Algol 60 (named for the year in which it was developed), he is widely credited for the programming language’s influential elegance and organization.
