Patriot Act on Path to Renewal

A Republican deal that would add some civil-liberties protections to the USA Patriot Act survived a challenge in the U.S. Senate on Thursday, making the long-term renewal of the controversial law seem likely. The challenge came from a Democrat who called the added protections “insignificant, face-saving changes.” (The Chronicle, suscription required)
