Online Photos Fell a College Coach

November 19, 2006, 8:51 pm

College administrators have taken to warning student athletes to watch what pictures they put online: After all, a few photos of a hazing ceremony can submarine a team’s season. But coaches, not just students, are losing sleep over the prospect of indiscreet Web posts, according to an article in The Cincinnati Enquirer.

The newspaper profiles Doug Reisenfeld, the former coach of the water polo team at Miami University of Ohio, who has become one of the first coaches laid low by an incriminating picture posted online.

When Mr. Reisenfeld stopped in at a party held by students on the water-polo squad, he said, he saw nothing more troubling than “kids having fun.” But when a member of the team posted photos of the event on a site called Webshots, others saw something a bit more sinister: There was Mr. Reisenfeld, beer in hand, in the company of a group of freshmen who were also drinking beer — and, for good measure, wearing Speedos outside in the middle of December.

The pictures soon popped up on BadJocks, a Web site that chronicles allegedly out-of-control student-athletes. Faced with evidence that Mr. Reisenfeld appeared to be condoning hazing and underage drinking Miami officials decided to fire the coach. —Brock Read
