Online Lost and Found

September 25, 2007, 2:46 pm

Besides spreading urban legends and circulating embarrassing images, e-mail chain messages can do some good. A woman at Ohio State University found someone’s digital camera outside of the football stadium before a game and used the Internet to track down the owner, says the Associated Press.

She e-mailed an image from the camera to fellow Buckeye fans, asking if anyone recognized the people in the picture. Those fans e-mailed it to friends, who e-mailed it some more. Within 48 hours, the owner was discovered and the camera returned.

Michelle Montgomery, the woman who found the camera, said the success demonstrates the Internet’s power. “Think of the way we could use it if we wanted to do something meaningful and powerful in the world,” she told The Columbus Dispatch. —Dan Carnevale
