Ohio University's IT department has drawn plenty of fire in the last year — first for a series of security breaches that cost several people their jobs, and then over a pair of entertainment-industry lists that suggested the university had a serious piracy problem.
But maybe Ohio's beleaguered IT employees deserve a bit of slack. They haven't had much to work with, as a study conducted by Gartner Consulting shows: The university spends only about $12-million a year on tech services. Similar institutions spend an average of about $27.4-million on their IT departments, the Gartner study said.
Campus officials told The Post of Athens, Ohio, that it would take them several years to get their IT spending up to snuff. But since Ohio is thoroughly revamping its IT offices, bolstering the budget will probably be a priority. –Brock Read
