OSCnet, Ohio’s high-speed computer network originally designed for higher education and the public schools, will take on a vastly expanded role in the state. The governor’s office announced last week a plan to extend the network to state and local government agencies, as well as underserved populations.
The education network will be providing some of its bandwidth to Ohio’s new Next Generation Network, which will serve as the OSCnet extension into the broader service area. The Ohio Supercomputer Center, which runs OSCnet, will continue to manage the education network and provide connections to the new network.
Stanley C. Ahalt, executive director of the supercomputer center, said in a written statement that OSCnet has ample bandwidth to handle all the new responsibilities. —Josh Fischman
