The National Science Foundation and other key players in Internet history are holding an event today at which top networking engineers are taking a stroll down memory lane, discussing the creation of the Internet.
The event, called “The Partnership That Changed the World,” is being Webcast live, and organizers say an archive of recordings from the event will be offered as well.
Though panelists this morning remembered the excitement they felt at inventing TCP/IP protocol and other technical underpinnings of the global computer network, they admitted that few realized its full significance at the time. When news conferences were held announcing portions of the network back in 1985, “only a few reporters showed up,” said James J. Blanchard, who as governor of Michigan had helped secure money for the research.
A panel tomorrow will look ahead to the future of the Internet and stress the importance of partnerships between universities, technology companies, and government agencies in sparking network innovation. —Jeffrey R. Young
