To protect their electronic data and computer networks, colleges have stepped up their use of virtual private networks, spam filters, and fire walls, among other measures, according to a report released on Tuesday by the Educause Center for Applied Research.
The report also says that, over the past two years, the most serious threat facing colleges has shifted. Institutions used to worry about outsiders seizing control of computers and networks, but now the greater danger is that intruders will gain access to confidential electronic data.
