On Tuesday, only three days into the new Senate, two lawmakers — Byron L. Dorgan, Democrat of North Dakota, and Olympia J. Snowe, Republican of Maine — reintroduced their bill promoting the principle of network neutrality. The legislation advocates that all Internet traffic should be treated equally and that the content of certain Web sites should not be delivered faster than that of others to consumers' computers.
The legislation, which academe supports, is expected to get a warmer reception this go-round in the new Democratic-controlled Congress. But adoption of the bill will still be difficult since telephone and cable companies have been aggressively lobbying against it. –Andrea L. Foster
