NASA to Make Space Images Public Online

August 27, 2007, 12:40 pm

NASA’s storehouse of historic photographs, film, and video will be digitized and made available free on the Internet with the assistance of the Internet Archive, a nonprofit digital library, according to a written statement released Thursday by the two organizations.

Under the five-year contract, the Internet Archive will digitize, host, and manage computer-generated images produced by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration at no charge to it. The government agency has more than 20 collections of images online.

The two groups will also develop a procedure for automatically capturing and cataloguing new images for inclusion in the archive. —Andrea L. Foster
