Name That Mystery Library

September 15, 2005, 3:49 pm

Many in the library community apparently think they’ve figured out which Connecticut organization received an order from the Federal Bureau of Investigation to turn over the records of library patrons under a controversial provision of the USA Patriot Act. Although the identity of the organization is still under seal, pending a federal appeals court ruling on whether it can be made public, many now believe that it is Library Connection, a library consortium that offers services to libraries in the Hartford area, according to an article in The New York Times. The group did not return a call from The Chronicle. The organization is primarily made up of public libraries, and has only one academic library—St. Joseph College’s Pope Pius XII Library—out of 36 member institutions. (The New York Times)

For more on the situation see an article in The Chronicle by Andrea L. Foster.
