Need to shave a few thousand dollars off your campus technology budget? Try cutting down on paper waste. Officials at Northern Iowa University expect a new system that monitors what students print in public computer labs to cut their annual costs by over $20,000.
But some professors and students think it’s only a matter of time before the university forces students to pay for printing privileges. At DePaul University, which installed a similar monitoring technology to limit printing several years ago, students who had exceeded their quotas simply asked their friends to print additional documents for them. Last fall the university started charging students to use public printers—at a cost of 8 cents per page.
