Making Video Files Manageable

Commercial Internet providers are starting to grapple with a problem that has dogged campus networks for a few years: Video downloading is stretching their bandwidth to its breaking point.

But as video-streaming sites like YouTube increase the number of weighty files floating around the Web, a few start-ups are popping up with the hope of handle bandwidth concerns. Companies like Itiva and NTL are testing tools, based on BitTorrent’s peer-to-peer technology, that would break video files into pieces and make them less taxing to networks. (CNET News)
