Sun Microsystems' Worldwide Education and Research Conference is being held in San Francisco, and college officials there are discussing the future of higher education and how much of it will take place in cyberspace.
Facing increasing enrollments and limited building space, colleges may choose to create more hybrid courses that limit the time students spend in classrooms and allow them to "telecommute" online, CNET News reports.
A student panel at the conference encouraged colleges to promote student use of the Internet. Colleges have considered cracking down on students' use of social-networking sites, like Facebook, because students sometimes post personal information that embarrasses them and the institution. But students say they would rather be educated about how to use social-networking sites than banned from them altogether. –Dan Carnevale
