Google’s search tool that focuses on academic material, called Google Scholar, is winning a prominent place in the hearts, minds, and Web sites of some librarians.
At least a few university libraries have recently added links to Google Scholar to their main library Web pages. One of the most prominent is on the University of Texas at Austin’s library Web site, which features the colorful Google Scholar logo and a search box in the center of the page. A similar Google Scholar search box is available at the lower right of the library Web site for the University of North Carolina libraries. Other colleges and universities have set up less-prominent links to the academic search engine, including Georgia State University, which includes it on a Web page featuring various Internet search engines.
Most of the libraries also link to information pages stressing that there’s more to doing research than just Googling. "Some material you need for your research may not be in Google Scholar," says a note on the UNC library Web page. "Get other material, including full-text articles, from one or more of the UNC Library article databases."
