Kept-Up Librarian Plans a Crosstown Move

November 30, 2006, 4:07 pm

Steven J. Bell, who keeps up the Kept-Up Academic Librarian blog when he’s not writing or running the library at Philadelphia University, is about to make a move — in terms of career if not so much his physical location. In late December, Mr. Bell will become the associate university librarian for research and instructional services at Temple University.

Mr. Bell’s work is well known among academic librarians, and his name is frequently seen above thoughtful and provocative articles in Library Journal, ACRLog, American Libraries, and, of course, The Chronicle (September 30, 2005, February 20, 2004).

Speaking to The Chronicle just moments ago, he said that he was sorry to leave his colleagues at Philadelphia University, but that he was excited about a new phase of his career, at Temple. (And — as a bonus — Mr. Bell’s new position keeps him in Philadelphia, where he has deep roots. He earned his undergraduate degree at Temple in the 1970s.) Larry Alford, who directs libraries at Temple, says hiring Mr. Bell was like finding a gem in his backyard. –Scott Carlson
