IBM Agrees to Pay University in Patent Case

September 1, 2005, 9:32 am

IBM has settled a lawsuit filed by the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, the patenting arm of the University of Wisconsin at Madison. The foundation had argued that IBM had infringed a university patent when it manufactured copper-based computer chips. Since discovering that copper chips are widely used in consumer electronics, the university has campaigned to get companies to pay royalties for the technology. Several companies—including Sony, Samsung, and Infineon—have already settled. (Associated Press)

For more on one of the foundation’s other lawsuits, against the makers of the PlayStation 2 gaming system, see an article from The Chronicle by Goldie Blumenstyk.
