Computer engineering is so last year, at least at the University of Wales at Aberystwyth. Making its mark on a field that seems increasingly afflicted with next-big-thingism, the university has announced that it will create a degree program in cellphone design, reports the Western Mail.
The program may sound a bit gimmicky, but there could be something to it: Students looking to create next-generation mobile phones will get to work with hot technologies like global-positioning systems and radio-frequency identification tags. And officials at Aberystwyth say they are confident that cellphone manufacturers—salivating over the prospect of turning their products into entertainment devices—will be only too happy to employ well-rounded young tech whizzes. —Brock Read
