Computers have replaced stereos in many dorm rooms. At Cornell University, the machines might soon make TV’s, too, obsolete.
This fall, students living on the campus will be able to subscribe to CUTV—an Internet Protocol Television service that transmits cable broadcasts to PC’s (and televisions) through a high-speed data network. The service is more affordable than traditional cable, campus officials say; students will pay at least $30 a month for CUTV. Mac users, however, will still have to lug their televisions to the campus: The service works only on computers running Windows.
