Helsinki Student Learns a Pitfall of YouTube

February 21, 2008, 4:02 pm

YouTube, the video-sharing site, is a great forum for promoting one’s latest project or passion. But Petri Purho, a student at Helsinki Polytechnic in Finland, discovered that posting on the site also has a downside.

Mr. Purho’s game, Crayon Physics Deluxe, was a finalist this year in a competition among student video-game developers sponsored by the Independent Games Festival. Mr. Purho told an audience of online-game instructors on Tuesday at the annual Game Developers Conference that he made the mistake of posting a video about the game on YouTube before his game was officially released. The result? Lots of copycat videos on YouTube that diminished the value of his game.
