Hacker Strikes at Carnegie Mellon U.

April 21, 2005, 3:22 pm

Carnegie Mellon University is known for its computer-security research, but that doesn’t make it immune from hacking attacks.

Campus officials have discovered that the names and Social Security numbers of more than 5,000 students and alumni may have been accessed during a breach of the university’s computer network. Now the officials are scrambling to inform the potential victims—all of whom recently studied or worked at the university’s Tepper School of Business—that their personal information may have been compromised.
