Googling for Identity Theft

March 21, 2005, 3:20 pm

Latanya Sweeney, an associate professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University, built a program that regularly scans Google search results for names and Social Security numbers. But Ms. Sweeney is no identity thief: She’s simply trying to demonstrate that bad actors don’t need hacking know-how to find personal information on the Web.

In a paper she will present this week, she describes how she used Google to find 140 people’s Social Security information—and proposes that a system be set up to search the Web and alert people if their personal data appears online.
