The Microsoft Corporation is stepping up its defense in a dispute with the University of California over who owns the patent to a key Web-browser technology. Only weeks after a federal appeals court partly reversed a decision that could have awarded $565-million to the university and its spinoff, Eolas Technologies, Microsoft has asked for a new hearing on part of the ruling that went against the company. Its lawyers argue that software produced overseas from a "golden master" disc should not be subject to U.S. patent law.
