Instead of sending its retired computers to the trash heap (or the recycling center), Duke University is giving the machines second life at local schools. Through a deal with the Durham, N.C., public-school system, Duke will replace outdated schoolroom computers with leftover PC’s from its own storage rooms.
Giving away its old computers will actually cost Duke about $140,000 a year, campus officials say: All of the machines must be carefully scrubbed of data before being turned over to the schools. (The Herald-Sun)
