Extended Shelf Life

April 18, 2006, 2:43 pm

Facing opposition from professors and students, the University of Dundee, in Scotland, has scrapped a plan to get rid of some 22,000 library books that hadn’t been checked out in more than a decade.

The university had decided to throw out the books because its libraries were short on space. But opposition to the plan solidified after an economist on the campus bought a four-volume set for pocket change — and then found an identical set of books listed on eBay for more than $2,600.
