The explosives commonly used now by military and industry (such as TNT and RDX) hurt not only their intended targets, but the environment as well by releasing toxic gases. They are also relatively unsafe to handle, LiveScience reports.
The German scientists used tetrazoles to create explosives that release fewer toxic byproducts.
