The National Science Foundation has laid out its vision for the future of American research computing in an ambitious report. Among other things, it calls for broader access to high-end computing tools, "focusing especially on institutions with less capability and communities where computational science is an emerging activity."
The report argues that innovations in supercomputing and other high-speed hardware must be accompanied by similar advances in software for data management, visualization, and collaboration. And it advocates "high-risk/high-gain" research in fields that could lead to "future exponential growth in all aspects of computing." –Brock Read
