Almost two-thirds of college classrooms now have wireless Internet coverage, according to a new study released by Educause, the higher-education technology group.
For its Core Data Service Fiscal Year 2007 Summary Report, Educause surveyed 994 institutions, asking about trends in information technology. The 104-page report examines staffing, budgetary, and organizational issues, along with topics like networking, IT security, and faculty and student computing.
Here are some highlights from the report:
Nearly one-third of all top IT administrators report to a campus president, chancellor, or chief executive officer.
About half of all IT administrators are part of their president’s or chancellor’s cabinet.
At a typical institution, there are 154 full-time students per full-time IT staff member.
More than 90 percent of classrooms are equipped with wired Internet connections and 65.6 percent have wireless capabilities.
Nearly half of the institutions have created an emergency notification system.
