Designing a program that thwarts would-be music and movie pirates might make you popular with the entertainment industry, but it won’t win you many fans in the peer-to-peer community, according to John Hale, director of the Center for Information Security at the University of Tulsa. After developing software that floods file-sharing networks with decoy files, Mr. Hale has received several obscene messages from angry downloaders—including one who threatened to deposit a truckload of excrement in his yard.
