Do-It-Yourself Windows

August 23, 2005, 11:39 am

Most peer-to-peer pirates are, in all likelihood, simply ripping off songs and software they don’t want to pay for. But a select few are using the services for more creative (if still illegal) purposes: They’re hacking into Microsoft Windows, rejiggering it, and releasing the new versions online.

The remixed versions of Windows, which are available on file-swapping systems like BitTorrent, typically make only minor changes to the original. Programmers often trim features they deem unnecessary or add security patches that Microsoft has released for download. But analysts point out that turning to pirated software for security help shows dubious logic, to say the least. (Wired News)
