Dismembering eDonkey

February 23, 2006, 2:55 pm

While it’s never earned as much publicity as file-swapping services like KaZaA and Grokster, eDonkey has became one of the Internet’s go-to sources of pirated music and movies. That’s why movie-industry officials are crowing over a pair of raids that shut down one of eDonkey’s largest servers.

The raids — conducted in Belgium and Switzerland — nabbed the owner of the network’s Razorback2 server, which was frequented by about a third of eDonkey’s users. The network wasn’t just a piracy hub; it was "a menace to society," said John G. Malcolm, the Motion Picture Association of America’s antipiracy director. (Design Technica)
