Discontent Over Online Voting

March 1, 2006, 11:36 am

Some Pennsylvania State University students say they’ve been disenfranchised — and the culprit, in this case, is their own online voting system. The institution’s University Park campus held a referendum on a plan to restructure its student government, but students studying abroad were prohibited from voting because, election officials say, the voting Web site was able to accommodate only on-campus students. Will there be an e-book/database version?

I’d just point out that the 26 years it took to complete this project is a pittance in comparison to the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae.  Currently run by the Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften, the TLL was begun in 1896 with the aim of cataloguing, defining, and illustrating every word of the Latin language from its origins up through the time of Isidore of Seville (d. 636).  In the last few years, they finally completed the letter P, though work is still in progress on N and R.  According to their website (http://www.thesaurus.badw.de/), they anticipate finally completing the project by 2050, more than 150 years after its inception.

Yes,  @chronicle-a27e3f0172e92acc4ae5edb208992313:disqus , now that the A-Z is complete, I am pleased to say that Harvard University Press is planning a digital edition of the Dictionary of American Regional English. It will be a website including the text of the dictionary, with many more ways to search and browse for words–plus enhancements such as audio from the original DARE field recordings.
