The secrecy that cloaked an FBI order to a Connecticut library group last year was lifted on Wednesday, when U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg allowed the court records in the case to be unsealed.
The FBI’s secret order, under the USA Patriot Act, sought to identify an individual who had used a library computer to allegedly issue a terrorist threat. The library group, Library Connection Inc., in Windsor, Conn., refused to turn over its computer records, and in June the FBI said it would no longer seek them (The Chronicle, July 7, 2006). The American Civil Liberties Union later asked the court to unseal the records, although the group acknowledged that the documents probably would not offer any unexpected details about the case. —Andrea L.
