Colleges Strip Social Security Numbers From ID Cards

Colleges across the country are deciding that the best way to keep students’ Social Security numbers safe from hackers is to stop using the data altogether. In the wake of a spate of security breaches on campus networks, institutions like Illinois State University are issuing students new ID cards that contain randomly generated numbers instead of Social Security information. It’s an important step, officials say, but it’s not cheap: Illinois State expects to spend about $250,000 to replace the cards. (The Pantagraph)
