Collecting Data, Carelessly

April 27, 2006, 12:31 pm

Colleges aren’t just keeping dangerous amounts of data about students and faculty online; they’re also playing fast and loose with the tools they use to gather that information, according to a new survey.

The survey — conducted by Bentley College and Watchfire, a company specializing in online risk management — collected details on the Web-privacy policies of 236 institutions. And it found that most colleges have a less-than-stellar record when it comes to the security of their e-commerce and data-collection services:

"Practically 100 percent" of the colleges posted at least one data-collection form online without linking to a privacy notice. "A full 100 percent" of the colleges had at least one data-collection form on an unsecured Web page. (CNET News)
