California Picks Music Providers

July 19, 2005, 11:47 am

The University of California and the California State University systems have decided to recommend four online-music vendors—Cdigix, Mindawn, Napster, and Sony—to officials at any of their campuses who want to offer students a legal music service. Now, those campus officials will have to decide whether to sign their universities up with any of the four services.

David H. Walker, director of advanced technology for the University of California system, says that officials briefly considered subsidizing music downloads for all UC students, as Pennsylvania State University officials have done, but quickly rejected the notion as too expensive. "In general, UC doesn’t see it as the best use of UC money to do that," said Mr. Walker. "Our mission is education and research."
