Blackboard and TechRadium Settle Patent Dispute Over Emergency-Notification Services

August 17, 2009, 3:01 pm

Blackboard has reached an agreement with a competitor that had sued the company for allegedly violating a patent on emergency-notification systems.

TechRadium, which makes emergency-notification software, filed suit against Blackboard last year in U.S. District Court in Texas, claiming that similar software sold by Blackboard violates TechRadium’s patent. Blackboard began selling notification software last year when it purchased NTI Group. For its part, Blackboard had countersued, alleging that TechRadium violated its patents.

The companies announced last week that they would now “cross license” several patents, though neither side would release details of the arrangement. In a statement, Blackboard said the agreement “ends the lawsuit between the two companies and allows each company to continue efforts to provide mass notification technology and services to clients.”
