Big Brother Is Dressing You

Texas A&M University’s Corps Cadets, a group that bills itself as "the largest uniformed body of students in the nation outside the U.S. service academies," harks back to the days when Texas A&M was still a military school. But to keep track of the uniforms, the corps has adopted a modern approach.

The university is outfitting cadets’ pants, shirts, skirts, and jackets with tags that use radio-frequency identification, or RFID, to keep track of the garments’ whereabouts. Officials say the technology will make it much easier for them to take inventory of the articles, which students rent every year. But some privacy advocates have expressed concerns about RFID tags, arguing that the devices could broadcast personal information to snoops or government officials. (RFID Journal)

For more on RFID tags, and their growing popularity among campus librarians, see an article from The Chronicle by Scott Carlson.
