Robert Birgeneau, the chancellor of the University of California at Berkeley, has told students that he will take steps to bolster the institution’s computer security after a burglar made off with a laptop that included 98,000 people’s personal information last month. The university will hire an independent auditor to investigate security weaknesses, and start encrypting sensitive data on campus computers, he said.
"Our students, staff and alumni expect us to protect the information they have give us confidentially, and we have not maintained that trust," Mr. Birgeneau wrote in a campuswide e-mail.
