The University of California at Berkeley has finally recovered a laptop, stolen in March, containing personal data on more than 98,000 current and former students. In its six months off the campus, the IBM X40 took quite a journey.
The $2,400 computer, it turns out, was stolen by a woman who then sold it to Shuki Alburati, a freshman at the City College of San Francisco who sells laptops and cellphones online. Mr. Alburati, who sold the machine to a buyer in South Carolina via eBay, says he had no idea that the laptop was stolen. Police nonetheless have charged him with a misdemeanor.
