Assaying the State of Campus Computer Security

October 26, 2006, 4:18 pm

“A recent survey found that 39 percent of known [computer-security] breaches involving legally protected data occurred within higher education,” said Tracy Mitrano, director of IT policy at Cornell University, during The Chronicle’s Brown Bag chat today. But Ms. Mitrano added that most colleges “have the will and are finding the governance” to respond to hacking incidents and other data breaches: “Sometimes I think higher education makes headlines because we are open and because we respond in ways that for profit corporations may not have either the requirement or will to do so.”

A complete transcript of the chat — in which Ms. Mitrano discussed colleges’ IT security and legal liability — is now available online.
