The Associated Press asks a question that has, no doubt, been on the minds of some campus administrators: If laptops are so easily lost and stolen, why do companies and colleges allow so much sensitive data to be stored on them?
The answer is simple, according to Avivah Litan, a security analyst for Gartner: "It’s pure laziness."
Broadband networking and Web-based business software have eliminated any need for Social Security numbers or test scores to be put on portable machines, some experts say. But many employees still use laptops to take their work on the road, and many employers persist in encouraging the practice—without even requiring sensitive data to be encrypted.
