Antipiracy, Pro-Open Source

April 21, 2006, 2:39 pm

Persuading college students to stop pirating software so they can buy it legally is a fool’s errand, according to Courtney Farr, a senior at the University of Kansas. As Ms. Farr points out, many students have little or no experience purchasing computer programs — and without much cash at their disposal, they’re not especially motivated to start heading to the store.

If colleges really want to wean students off illegal downloads, Ms. Farr says, they should throw their weight behind open-source software. Many students simply don’t know much about open-source programming, even though the trend would seem to satisfy their desire to get something for nothing. (The University Daily Kansan)
